Anita Blake's hunt to discover the identity of the mysterious killer stalking St. Louis' vampires plunges her deeper into a subculture of were-creatures, undead and the humans who follow them, as she goes undercover at a perverse Freak Party and has another encounter with her employer: the city's Mast Vampire Nikolaos, whom Anita is increasingly convinced will slay her once her usefulness ends.
