The morgue is usually a quiet place--but in Anita Blake's world, it's a battlefield! Anita's hunt for the master vampire continues, and what she discovers challenges everything she knows about the undead creatures. When a body that should have remained dead rises and transforms into a powerful and animalistic vampire resistant to Anita's control, the monster turns the hospital morgue into his personal buffet--with the armed security guards as the main course!

Anita investigates a second bloodless victim with multiple bite wounds--evidence that more than one vampire has feasted on the body--and she realizes her understanding of group vampire attacks is all wrong. While she believed the victim of a group attack could not rise, the truth is far more terrifying.

Now, the first multiple-bite victim must be staked before he can rise again, and Anita races to the hospital morgue to put down the threat. What she discovers is beyond even Anita's considerable experience--bodies strewn everywhere and evidence the vampire escaped through a five-foot-thick steel door! Clearly, this is no ordinary vampire and Anita will have to add some tricks to her bag to stop this dangerous new beast and reveal the identity of the master vampire leading these group attacks.

Anita gets another new headache when her boss hires a rookie animator to complete the cases she missed during her investigation. Larry Kirkland, a 20-year-old college kid, proves he has the power to raise three zombies during his first night on the job--but not the experience to control them. When Anita finishes cleaning up Larry's mess, he gets a lesson in what it takes to be an animator at Human's First, a right-wing group that hates anything supernatural, attacks them! Poor Larry thinks the night is over, but it's really just beginning!
