Anita Blake has had a busy life as a professional necromancer. After a year of non-stop action, Halloween is fast approaching and there's no time off for someone who raises the dead for a living.

   Worn out, all she wants is eight hours of sleep--but the cases keep coming, including a surprise call from the St. Louis Police Department to investigate a vampire victim with bite marks from at least three different vampires.

   But nothing goes by the book for Anita, and this isn't the typical vampire-related case. For starters, the victim was completely drained of his blood--an unusual modus operandi for a vampire. Plus, vampires being solitary hunters, the only way they would hunt in a pack is if they were under the spell of a master vampire. Anita must figure out who is behind these bizarre vampire killings. And with only two known master vampires in the city, she knows right where to start her investigation--with the seductive Jean Claude, who still has his sights set on Anita!

   Traveling to his club, Circus of the Damned, to ask him a few questions, Anita finds Jean Claude employing a terrifying crowd of shape-shifters and a new master vampire, the sultry Yasmine, who has it in for Anita. Not to mention a rampaging giant cobra that may be a god! And everyone is itching for a fight. Anita will have to survive this circus of horrors if she hopes to get to the bottom of the murder!
